Sandwiches by day, all-ages shows by night, right across from the Navy base
Fatty's started out on Front Beach Rd, tucked under the Calypso towers. Charlie opened it as a sandwich shop that didn't take itself too seriously. Big hoagies, loud music, weird stuff on the walls and a homemade TV commercial with a guy in a chicken suit. Folks who've been coming since the Calypso days still ask about the hand chair.
One of the guys behind the counter back then was Ian Ates. He started in 2008, learned every sandwich on the board and stuck around. After about ten years Charlie handed him the keys, and Ian has been running Fatty's #2 on Thomas Dr ever since. The Front Beach spot is gone now, but everything that made it Fatty's moved down the road with him.
Ian grew up on his parents' records, painted Ozzy's name on his bedroom wall in high school and turned the dining room into a rock museum. He feeds the Navy divers across the street, single moms, ball teams and touring bands. After close, he hands the room to local punk, metal and roots acts. Last Christmas, an all-ages show there raised over $1,100 plus a pile of toys for Family Service Agency of Bay County.
"Our goal is to feed you a great meal as quickly as I can possibly get it out to you. Every day, baby."
